How the human being can be ?

To be or not to be. Freud could have choose the Hamlet tragedy instead of the Oedipe’s game over. After Freud left is that tragedy that prevails.

Because in-between the id, the ego and the super-ego – the inner willing, the personality and its banishments is that grey. I am but I am not on the same way.

How it plays ? Play it again…

The id psychology relates to the instinctive, archaic motions.

There is a huge part of the ego which introjects part of these motions FROM the mother and the father figures. This primary super-ego is called ego-ideal whilst the inner image of oneself is called the ideal-ego and stands for perfection. There is a discord between the idealized image and the chaotic primary reality. Nevertheless the human being will deal with these controversial parts by splitting them off and getting them together into its own identity.

The ego-ideal is likely « the precipitate of the old picture of the parents, the expression of admiration for the perfection which the child them attributed to them. »

This split phenomenon applies to every trauma the human being goes through. The emotion is rejected, but there are still memory traces we can record among many others. Pleasant and unpleasant records can be side by side whist the whole process is represed, censored. But everything lies at the unconscious le vel. Resistances produce denial, rationalization, reaction formations, fantasy and ultimately projections. The threaten comes from outside. The other becomes either the ennemy or the beloved victim. Ordinary harassment gets explained.

In adition to that, the advanced super-ego which comes along with education, reflection, ethics and empathy and which is hopefully supported by the whole society fails under unconscious pressure.

Fixing the ideal which actualizes himself when social grouping is key.

Group members are related to an ideal image. They can put it in a leader or in a common project. This ideal can either freeze or move and get into a « good enough » reality that will inspire others.

Freud’s greatest contribution to modern thinking is this theory of inconscious.

The positivism that was popular in Freud’s scientific advanced time – getting definitely rid of religious determinism – claimed that people could gain real knowledge of the world and of themshelves, and that we had rational control over both. They insisted on « hard facts » even in Psychology. Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck culminated this work into Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in 1950’s. These psychologists admit that between the stimulus and response lies a « mediational process ».

As Freud said we are motivated by unconscious forces within us. He suggested that consciousness actually exists in layes and there were many psychic process that went on beyond the surface, within the implicit inconscious. CBT therapists keep on trying to model these process. Psychoanalysts persevere, insisting that there is a level to the human mind, a kind of natural intelligence never transformed into « AI », that will never become obvious and reproductible through the study of cognición or behaviour wich remain at an explicit level.

In the 1990s, new findings in neurosciences suggested the same thing: there are parts of the human brain that work (« think ») implicitly, beyond conscious awareness, and control mucho of what we do, assume and expect.

Contemporary psychologists continue to work on the « psyche » – that unknown part of the self who reveals through irrational acts and preferences wich appear once again to be inexplicable even to the person concerned. Far from having one mind, we have several as suggested by very famous profesional therapists such as Eric Berne (transactions analysis). Again, there are several layers and their organization depends so much on earliest learning and bounds we almost completely forgot about. This sets in place our default understanding of ourselves, other people and what the world is like. Unless we develop on-going practices !

Either In HR, Consulting and Transformation.

From the Norfield experience to Tavistok Institute and their blockings and actual Tee-groups, this process of denial and recognition has lessons to us.

And these are my lessons and practices everywhere where unconsciousness is not an option and the tragedy comes to epics here.
